Inside Oakley's O Lab

Oakley sunglasses are expensive. But apparently, they're expensive for reasons other than the recognizable "O" logo that's stuck on them. Nope, they're resistant to shattering if something strikes them, unlike other sunglasses that'll happily embed shards of themselves in your eyes when hit. They can also withstand 2 pound weights falling on them and handle lasers better than other glasses. They test all these things in the "O Lab."

Take a closer look...

Watch this video to find out the extensive tests that Oakley's shades undergo.

100Mbps Certification Testing

CableLabs has started testing and certifying the next generation of cable modems that use the DOCSIS 3.0 standard. In sorta English, we're talking boxes that'll handle 160Mbps download speeds and 120Mbps up, putting them on par with fiber optic services.

Cable ISPs currently use DOCSIS 1.1, which has been "good enough" in the past. Unfortunately, when compared to fiber, DOCSIS 1.1 lacks in the speed department. DOCSIS 3.0 has the potential to drastically change that, with download speeds of up to 160Mbps and uploads of up to 120Mbps possible. In addition, DOCSIS 3.0 also offers full support for IPv6, along with enhanced network management and security features. DOCSIS 3.0 also offers enough bandwidth for IPTV and other high-def video services.

Blendie 2004

Voice Controlled Blender... LOL.

MIT students have developed "Blendie 2004"
, a voice-controlled blender that is quite strange to say the least, in terms of functionality, but yet fascinating at the same time.

Virtual Barbarshop

I came across this incredible sound file a few months ago. Its takes you into a virtual barbershop. You've got to listen to it with your headphones. Please, DO NOT USE SPEAKERS, USE HEADPHONES, or you will ruin the sound illusion.

The technique used to create these audio is called Binaural Recording. Binaural recording is a method of recording audio which uses a special microphone arrangement. Dummy head recording refers to a specific method of capturing the audio, generally using a bust.

Worlds Smallest Precision Electric Guitar

This six-string guitar is the smallest precision electric guitar available. At 26 1/2" long, it is 1/6th the size of a standard guitar, yet it has 20 frets. The guitar has a dual-coil pickup that can provide either single-coil or humbucker tone, controlled by a pickup selector switch in the guitars base. It has a concentric tone and volume control, allowing you to adjust each individually. An included adjustable strap snaps into pre-formed holes in the guitars body and the side of the fretboard, allowing you to hold the guitar at your preferred height. The six tuning machines will not slip, keeping the guitar in perfect tune.

Crayon Physics

The Crayon Physics Deluxe must be one of the coolest touchscreen games ever. The aim is very simple: take a ball to where the start is. The tools to do it are a crayon and your imagination, since whatever you draw will automatically get recognized by the physics engine and put into motion over a piece of paper.

Super Mario Played by Tesla Coils

Twin Solid State Musical Tesla coils playing Mario Bros theme song at the 2007 Lightning on the Lawn Teslathon sponsored by DC Cox (Resonance Research Corp) in Baraboo WI. The music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating. There are no speakers involved. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software.

Indoor Tornado

The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany turned its smoke ventilation system into a spectacle. Guinness World Records organization is calling the world's largest artificial tornado. To create the effect, the museum's designers set up a disco smoke machine, then activated a set of 144 nozzles on the ceiling of the building's enormous atrium. The ventilation system, designed for emergencies, sucks the disco smoke up from below. To produce a spinning vortex, however, they blew air in from the sides, forcing the smoke to swirl. [Pop Sci]
